What is Fairtrade?

Fair Trade transforms trade through better prices, fair working conditions and fairer deals for farmers and workers in developing countries.

The Fairtrade approach gives farmers and workers more control over their lives and allows them to decide how to invest in their future.

As a leader in the global movement for fair trade, Fairtrade supports and challenges companies and governments, connecting farmers and workers with the people who buy their products.

By choosing Fairtrade, people can make a difference through their everyday actions: a product labelled Fairtrade means that producers and companies have met internationally agreed standards and have been independently certified.

Farmers and workers have a strong voice at every level of Fairtrade, from investing in local organisations and how they operate, to having an equal say in Fairtrade's global decision-making.

Key Benefits of Fair Trade

Fairtrade is changing people's lives by changing trade. We put wealth back into developing countries and give back to farmers and workers who deserve a fair income and a fair job. We are the leader of the independent global movement for trade fairness and remain the most recognised and trusted sustainable trading standard in many major markets.

Fairtrade is more than just a certification scheme - it works with a global grassroots community of 1.9 million farmers and workers, more than 2,000 Fairtrade Towns in 28 countries, and countless schools, universities and faith-based organisations.

Fairtrade provides a vital safety net for producers by setting minimum prices for all staple commodities, and our unique Fairtrade Premium gives farmers and workers extra money they can freely invest. Since 2014, Fairtrade producers and farmers have received more than €994 million in premium payments.

Fair Trade believes the best way to end poverty is to pay farmers a fair price for their products and workers a fair wage for the work they do. We put fair prices first because farmers and workers in developing countries deserve a fair income and fair work.

Fairtrade is the only global sustainability standard that is equally owned and controlled by producers, and Fairtrade workers are protected by strong, transparent standards. We support women in starting their own businesses and train them to become entrepreneurs and community leaders.

Fairtrade contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The overarching goal of ending poverty in all its forms everywhere is at the heart of Fairtrade. Our standards go beyond certification: they are essential development tools.

If you're serious about sustainability, Fairtrade is your independent, pragmatic and flexible business partner. For consumers, with hundreds of labels to choose from, Fairtrade gives you the trust and confidence to make sustainable shopping choices.
